Bugaboo Recalls Strollers Due to Risk of Brake Failure

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bugaboo Bee Strollers

Units: About 22,500

Distributor: Bugaboo North America Inc., of Hermosa Beach, Calif.

Manufacturer: Bugaboo Design & Sales, B.V., of the Netherlands

Hazard: One or both sides of the brakes can fail, causing a stroller to unexpectedly roll away on an incline. This can pose a risk of injury to the child occupant.

Incidents/Injuries: Bugaboo has received 121 reports of the stroller’s brakes failing. No injuries have been reported.

Description: Bugaboo Bee strollers have item code 580210 on a label on the back of the seat and item code 50100 on a label on the plastic support under the seat. The strollers were sold in blue, dark khaki, pink, red, yellow, and black. “bugaboo® bee” is printed on the left side of the seat.

Sold at: Juvenile product retailers nationwide and on various Web sites from August 2007 through April 2009 for about $530.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the strollers immediately and contact Bugaboo to receive a free repair kit. To order the bracket kit, go to www.bugaboo.com and fill in the special order form or contact Bugaboo customer service.

Name of Product: Folding Toy Beach Chair for Stuffed Animals

Units: About 260,000 chairs in the United States and 9,700 in Canada

Importer: Build-A-Bear Workshop®, of St. Louis, Mo.

Hazard: This toy chair legs can bruise, pinch or cut fingers if caught while folding.

Incidents/Injuries: There have been eight injuries reported.

Description: This recall involves a wood frame, canvas seat, toy beach chair for stuffed animals. Some styles include an attached pillow. The toy chairs are blue (style #’s 002281, 004463, 009907, 011565, 102281, 109907, 111565), red (style #’s 007391, 011566, 107391, 111566), fuchsia/white stripe (style #’s 013226, 113226), Orange/white stripe (style #’s 013227, 113227).

Sold by: Build-A-Bear Workshop stores nationwide and online at www.buildabear.com from March 2001 through October 2008 for about $8 in the US and from March 2003 through October 2008 in for about $10 in Canada.

Remedy: Return the toy beach chair to any Build-A-Bear Workshop store to receive an $8 USD/$10 CDN store coupon. If it is not possible to return the toy chair to a store, you can contact the company for alternate instructions on receiving a refund.

Hazard: The surface paint on the monkey figure contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Description: This recall involves the “Dinosaur Era 2 Hunting Dinosaur” play set. Each play set contains a dinosaur, a helicopter, trees, a hunter, a monkey and various hunting equipment.

Sold at: DND Trading in Los Angeles throughout December 2008 for about $7.

Remedy: Consumers should discard the monkey figure immediately to remove the hazard and contact the firm for a refund or exchange.

Name of Product: Shape-O Toy Maracas

Units: About 44,000

Importer: Tupperware U.S. Inc., of Orlando, Fla.

Hazard: The maracas can break and expose small parts, posing a choking hazard to young children. In addition, the handle poses a suffocation hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: Tupperware has received two reports of maracas breaking. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves blue and red toy maracas with yellow handles. The maracas were used by Tupperware representatives during sales presentations. Cut-outs in the shape of stars, squares and other geometric figures are located inside the maraca.

Sold by: Tupperware’s Holiday 2007 and Spring 2008 product catalogs from September 2007 through April 2008 for between $5.50 and $11.

Remedy: Consumers and Tupperware sales consultants should immediately stop using the maracas and return them to Tupperware for a refund or gift certificate. Maraca return forms can be accessed at www.tupperware.com

Hazard: The head of the stuffed butterfly toy can detach from the body, posing a choking hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Lakeshore has received three reports of the head of the butterfly detaching from the body. No injuries were reported.

Description: The recalled product is a soft, multi-colored box with a different color on each side. “What’s Inside?” is embroidered on the front of the box and symbols of a lion, flower and purple butterfly are stitched on another side. Each feely box contains ten small stuffed pieces. The piece affected by this recall is the pink and purple butterfly.

Sold by: Lakeshore Learning Materials stores nationwide and Toys To Grow On™ catalogs from September 2008 through February 2009 for about $40.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled product away from children and contact Lakeshore to receive a free replacement butterfly.

Hazard: The eyes on these bears can come off, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: State Farm received one report of the plastic eye of a bear coming off and a child placing it in her mouth. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the 11-inch (28 cm) and 18-inch (46 cm) State Farm Good Neigh Bears with plastic eyes. The bears are brown and wear a white and red State Farm shirt.

Sold at: The bears were given away free through State Farm agents and at State Farm sponsored events from September 2005 through March 2007.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take these bears away from young children and discard them.

Name of product: Shakespeare Casting Game and Fishing Kits

Units: About 2,600

Distributer: Pure Fishing Inc., of Columbia, S.C.

Hazard: The label on the fishing rod contains a surface coating containing high levels of lead in violation of the ban on lead in paint.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recalled Shakespeare Casting Game and Fishing Kit consists of a red and blue rod and reel with red foam targets and hook. The label is found on the front of the reel and reads “Casting Fun”.

Sold by: Specialty fishing retailers nationwide from November 2008 through January 2009 for about $15.
